Mandatory 10-digit dialing for calls takes effect October 24th
SHEBOYGAN — Starting later this month, everyone must dial 10 digits of the telephone number, including the area code, for all calls.
Previously, just dialing the seven digits would work for local calls. For example, to reach Sheboygan City Hall, you will need to dial 920-459-4000 instead of just dialing 459-4000.
Mandatory 10-digit dialing for calls becomes effective on October 24, 2021.
Callers in Wisconsin, and most other states, will need to include the area code in making any call. This is part of an upgrade to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. In July 2020, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved 988 as the three-digit abbreviated dialing code to reach the lifeline starting next summer.
